Just go by his weight and size, im 5′11 175 and i wear a medium. anything bigger than me probably a large.

I’m 5′10 183lbs I wear a size 38 or Medium leather.
I’ve weighed as much as 205 and still wore my 38/ medium. It was just a little harder to layer in for colder weather.

Usually, when a size is stated (like a size 42), that’s the chest measurement, going under armpits.

Get his chest measurement, under the armpits, while he is wearing a comfy sweater. Then you can compare size with chest measurement (they’re usually about the same).
If you’re surprising him, be sure the jacket has built in “CE armor” for the spine.

Different manufacturers have a different idea of what is med or large. I’m 6′1″ 200 lbs. and I wear a large to x-large, all according to manufacturer.Leather surprises usually don’t work to well. I’d just take him with you. He may not want another jacket. I’ve had mine since1985 and I’m not trading any time soon.

They are sized by chest size. Measure his chest in inches under his arms or look at one of his suits, and get that size. I have a 48″ chest, so I wear a US 48 (same as Euro 58).
